Every year, on New Year’s Eve people around the world make New Year Resolutions to better themselves, but most of the time, those resolutions fail because we don’t stick to them. Instead of creating a resolution, we should create a new goal or goals to strive to achieve in the New Year. With resolutions, most of the time we just talk about doing this or that, but never do it or stick with it. When we have goals, it is because our heart and mind is made up to achieve a certain task. With goals, we have a desire for it. Our desires should align with God and what He wants for our lives.
Resolution- “a firm decision to do or not to do something.”
Goal- “the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.”
As Christians, our resolutions should become goals that we strive to reach daily. We should have goals that help push us closer to God and to dive deeper into His word. Our goals should challenge us to be less lazy within our spiritual and physical lives. Our goals should point us to Christ Himself.
Without our spiritual lives being maintained, the rest simply doesn’t matter. Christ has to come first before anything else can fall into place.
Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:” “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:” “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
We find that in each one of these scriptures that our hearts and minds have to be committed to the Lord and that our goals need to be focused on Him above all else. By focusing on God, our minds will be more at peace and our lives will be full with joy and contentment.
I’ve never been one to have New Year’s Resolutions but this year, I decided to have goals to help draw me closer to God. I mean, yeah, I want to get back into shape and that’s why I bought a spin bike for the house, but my walk with God is more important than whether or not I feel like I’m getting heavy. I need to get my spiritual life into shape this year.
2018 is going to be all about God and the work of the Gospel for me. I’m excited to see where these goals of mine take me. Are you excited to see where your goals take you for God and His word this year?
