Sitting On the Fence

I remember a time when I was backslidden, but yet I would still play the part of being a Christian when it was necessary since I was a pastor’s kid. I’d party with my friends, cuss like a sailor, and live like the world until Sunday rolled around. I wanted God and the world at the same time, even though I knew that isn’t how serving the Lord works. You see, I thought as long as I did my part around church people, I’d be okay. Maybe I’d get an experience or two while at church and then I’d leave, going back to the sinful lifestyle I was really living. But one day, God got me at church camp and I had to run to that altar of prayer and repent of my ways. I knew I couldn’t be drinking & cussing and still call myself a Christian because we should be sinless. I repented that day back in July 2011 and got saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost. I never wanted what the world had to offer me after that.

“It’s either God or the world. Satan owns the fence.”

The fence is not a place to sit on or search around. It will lead you down a path you never intended on going. Be on the right side of the fence and choose to really serve God with all your heart. Don’t just put on a show or get an experience or two, but truly get a relationship with God.

Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:”

This scripture tells us that we have a choice to make. We can either choose death (the world/sin) or we can choose life (God/eternal things). I know the things of this world can be appealing to many because people want to have a good time, but I can promise you those things aren’t worth losing your soul over. When we choose God over this world and the sins that are within it, we are choosing a lifetime in paradise with our Creator.

The devil likes to make sins look fun and pretty, to draw people in, but he never shows you the consequences of those sins. He shows drinking as fun and harmless, but he doesn’t show the family torn apart by their husbands drinking. He shows smoking as something relaxing for the nerves, but he doesn’t show a woman laid up in a hospital bed dying of lung cancer. He shows sleeping around as the normal thing to do, but he doesn’t show the bad reputation you can get or the STD’s that many suffer from. He shows cussing as just a regular way to talk, but he doesn’t show how degrading and unbecoming those words can be.

The devil dresses sins up so that we will reach for them and try them. If someone handed you a pile of mud, you wouldn’t take it. But if someone dressed it up as a chocolate cake with sprinkles on it, you’d be enticed. The devil works by deceiving others.

Revelation 3:15-17 says, “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.” “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:”

These scriptures tell us that if we claim to be Christians, we have to be completely in and on fire for God. We cannot be lukewarm or else God will spew us out of His mouth. If we are lukewarm, we are already living on the wrong side of the fence.

The fence is a clear line of where to be standing and walking. The fence is not for us to climb on, sit on, or look around out of curiosity. The fence is there to tell us we are either in service for God or we are out.

I used to be one of those who sat on the fence. I tried being both a sinner and a Christian, but deep down I knew I was living wrong. I knew it took me being 100% committed to God to have a true relationship with Him to make it to Heaven one day. But instead of doing what I knew to be true, I decided to play both sides for a long time and because of that, I was miserable.

We don’t have to live a double life. We can live a life free from sin. We just have to be willing to give up the things of this world and pick up our cross instead. We have to be willing to turn our backs on the things that are most popular in this world and live a life of holiness. We will either have to choose to be a sinner or choose to be a Christian walking in righteousness and holiness. We should want to choose God over everything else.

God wants you to love Him and serve Him with all of your heart and being. Don’t be like the sheep in this picture who is wanting the world too. I can promise you, that lifestyle isn’t worth it. Get serious about God and your walk. Get happy about serving the Lord. It truly is worth it.

What will you choose today? The left hand side or the right hand side? Choose to be a sheep full of God.
